Hi friends,

Long-ish post, but bear with me here! Also, you might be asking why you need to be signed up for this newsletter when you already follow me on instagram? Because sometimes(!) I share new poems here, first. Sharing below a poem from my upcoming book, Same, in honor of Father’s Day.

And then some more

In twenty years I don’t think we will remember

if the dishes were done or the laundry was folded

each week. Who did what percent of the housekeeping

or yard cleaning. I’m not sure we’ll remember

what strategy we chose to pursue for independent

play or if we calmly agreed on the right way to

address toddler tantrums. I’ll remember this

morning, I think, when we curled up in bed,

showered our daughter with morning kisses,

all of us laughing together. Not that the house

was messy or our lives disorganized or that we

hadn’t figured out the best way to be the best parents.

Just that you and I gave all of the love we had to her

and to each other. All the love we thought we had,

and then some more.

Girl Dad

It’s not like we talked about it on our first

date or even our thirtieth. Exactly how

you’d hold our daughter when she was

born. How you’d walk her down the hall

in the mornings, pick her up and fly her

around the room every day. It’s not like

I asked you will you tell her she is loved every

chance that you get? Never make her feel like

she has to work for your approval? Will you be

silly and kind in the way that she needs?

It’s not like we talked about all of the ways

you’d be a father. It’s not like I knew all

of the ways you’d be just the one I wanted

my daughter to have.
